Peter Kennard-subversive photomontages.
Peter Kennard.
Kennard Philip work is subversive and challenges governments and contemporary society. His work uses photomontages to protest against wars and corporations such as Shell (below)
Kennard reworked an image by John Constable called The Haywain and placed cruise missiles in as a protest at the US government placing them on the UK mainland in the 80s. Britain had become a base for nuclear weapons which would be fired at the USSR in the event of hostility.
His work has inspired me due to its ability to take famous paintings such as Constables Haywain of a sentimental view of Britain during the nineteenth century and make it relevant by putting cruise missiles onto the image. So sentimentality has been replaced by anxiety and fear. Therefore changing the whole context of the image.
The more confident I become on Photoshop and Express, the more creative I want to become by using this to challenge the state. Kennard has been actively doing this using photography, art and photomontage since Vietnam. I find myself gravitating towards this medium.
